- Upgraded NRF Rating (B2) Faculty of Science (2022)
- Institutional Award – External Research Income Earner of the Year (2021)
- Indigenous Plant Use Forum – For research on South African Indigenous herbal medicines and research capacity development in the field of research (2021)
- Institutional Award – Vice Chancellor’s Researcher of the Year Runner-up (Male) (2021)

- T. Steynprys vir natuurwetenskaplike en tegniese prestasie (2019)
- Recipient of the AU-TWAS-ROSSA award from the Academy of Science in the category “basic sciences” in recognition of my contribution in advancing the knowledge on the safe and effective use of herbal medicines.
- Institutional Award – External Research Income Earner of the Year (2019)

- Institutional Award – Vice-Chancellor’s Researcher of the Year (Male) (2017)
- Institutional Award – Research Capacity Builder of the Year (2017)

- Finalist in the NSTF Annual Awards (2015) in the category: Research Capacity Development.
- Elected on to the Advisory Board of the American Botanical Council, February 2013.
- Appointed as Adjunct Professor in the Faculty of Pharmacy, King Abdulaziz University, Jedda, Saudi Arabia, February 2013.
- TUT’s Senior Researcher of the Year, awarded in 2010 and 2011.
2000-2009
- TUT’s Senior Researcher of the Year, awarded in 2007, 2008, 2009.
- An award from the South African Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences for the best peer-reviewed paper in the field of Pharmaceutics published in 2005 and again for a paper published in 2008. In 2006 I received an award from the same association for the best publication in the field of Pharmaceutical Chemistry (I was the principal author).
- South African Association of Botanists first, second and third prize for best Ethnobotany posters presented at the annual conference 2004.
- First and third prize for best Ethnobotany posters presented at the 7th Conference of the International Society of Ethnopharmacology (2003).
- The Vice Chancellor’s Friedel Sellschop Award from the University of the Witwatersrand. A research grant awarded (3 years) to an outstanding young scientist (2001-2003).
- SAAB First Prize for best Ethnobotany poster presented at the 27th annual conference of the South African Association of Botanists (2001).
- Received the Silver Medal from the South African Association of Botanist for exceptional advancement of South African Botany.

- Best Young Scientist Award for the best presentation delivered by a young scientist (younger than 30) at the National Congress of the South African Association of Botanists (1995).
